NCBG DESCRIPTIVES

INTRO: Erect to sprawling, rhizomatous and colonial perennial of savannas, sandhills and pine flatwoods.
STEMS: Stems 1-several, branched, smooth to slightly hairy.
LEAVES: Leaves alternate, sessile-clasping, spreading or turned downward at the tip, oblong-lance-shaped to triangular, to 1 1/4 in. long, thick-firm, rough-hairy; reduced to bracts above and on branches. Lower leaves wither early.
INFLORESCENCE:
FLOWERS: Composite flowers (heads) in a diffuse panicle; heads about 1/2 in. wide, consisting of 11-26 pale bluish-purple, narrow ray florets encircling a center disk of yellow tubular florets. 4-5 series of rough-surfaced, oblong-lance-shaped, pointy bracts, which are whitish with a diamond-shaped green patch, surround the bell-shaped base of each head.
FRUITS: Fruit a tan-tufted achene.
