NCBG DESCRIPTIVES
INTRO:Erect, rhizomatous and colonial perennial of floodplain forests, alluvial swamps, fens, river banks and moist meadows. STEMS: Stems 1-several, stout, sometimes with ascending-spreading branches, smooth or hairy. LEAVES: Leaves alternate,sessile and somewhat clasping, linear-lance-shaped to elliptic, 3-6 in. long, sometimes sparingly toothed, smooth or sometimes rough above. INFLORESCENCE: FLOWERS:Composite flowers (heads) in a large, open, leafy panicle; heads 3/4-1 in. wide, consisting of 16-50 narrow, white to pale blue ray florets encircling a center disk of yellow (becoming reddish-purple) tubular florets. 4-6 series of green (paler at base), close-pressed or slightly spreading,linear bracts surround the bell-shaped base of each head. FRUITS:Fruit a white-tufted achene. COMMENTS: HEIGHT: 1 1/2-6 ft. DURATION:

COMMENTS: NL (Newfoundland) west to SK, south to PA (Rhoads & Klein 1993), VA (reported in FNA), NC, SC (?), TN, MS, LA, and TX. Reported for Ashe County, NC (Poindexter & Murrell 2008).
