GENUS INDEX

GENUS CODE: POLYG4
GENUS SCIENTIFIC: Polygonum
GENUS AUTHORITY: L.
GENUS COMMON: Knotweed
GENUS SUMMARY: A genus of about 45 species, herbs, of temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Based on morphology, Ronse Decraene, Hong, & Smets (2004) suggested that Polygonella should be merged into Polygonum, as part of section Duravia; the close relationship of Polygonella and Duravia was confirmed using molecular evidence by Schuster, Reveal, & Kron (2011).

FAMILY INDEX

FAMILY CODE: POLYGO
FAMILY SCIENTIFIC: Polygonaceae
FAMILY AUTHORITY: A.L. de Jussieu 1789
FAMILY COMMON: Smartweed Family
FAMILY SUMMARY: A family of about 43-48 genera and 1100-1200 species, trees, shrubs, vines, and herbs, cosmopolitan, but especially north temperate. Recent changes in the circumscription of various genera (including Polygonum, Persicaria, Fallopia, etc.) have received strong support from molecular phylogenetic studies (Kim & Donoghue 2008; Lamb Frye & Kron 2003; Schuster, Reveal, & Kron 2011).
