NCBG DESCRIPTIVES

INTRO: Erect, clumped perennial of sandhills, sandy roadsides, sandy or gravelly fields and other dry, usually sandy, nutrient-poor habitats.
STEMS: Stems several from a crown, often reddish, smooth to densely hairy.
LEAVES: Leaves alternate, long-petioled, palmately divided into 5–11 oblong to lance-shaped leaflets, which are ¾–2 in. long, smooth above, and hairy beneath and on the margins.
INFLORESCENCE:
FLOWERS: Flowers in erect terminal racemes 4–10 in. long; each flower blue-violet, about ½ in. long, with typical pea-flower shape, the banner petal bearing a purple-streaked, white patch.
FRUITS: Fruit a densely hairy, flattened, linear-oblong pod.
COMMENTS: Two subspecies are recognized. Consult technical manuals for identification details.
HEIGHT: 8-30 in.
