NCBG DESCRIPTIVES
INTRO: Tall, celery-scented perennial from a large taproot, found in moist to dryish, nutrient-rich forests and woodlands. STEMS:Stem stout, green with white-waxy coating. LEAVES: Leaves alternate, to 14 in. long; lower leaves 3 or 4 times ternately compound, but upper leaves less divided or even simple. Leaflets are lance-shaped to oblong, thin-textured and serrate-edged to toothed. INFLORESCENCE: FLOWERS: Flowers in compoundterminal umbels, the umbellets with about 15 flowers each. Flowers ¼ in. wide, composed of 5 tiny white petals. FRUITS:Fruit a joined pair of flattened, oval seeds. COMMENTS: HEIGHT: 2-6 ft. DURATION:

PHENOLOGY: Jun-Jul; Aug-Sep.
HABITAT: Moist to dryish, nutrient-rich forests and woodlands.
COMMENTS: S. PA south to c. GA, AL, and Panhandle FL; also in s. MO and n. AR, centered in the Southern and Central Appalachians and the Ozarks-Ouachitas, but extending considerably into adjacent provinces, and even slightly into the Coastal Plain. A distinctive character is the straightish and toothless basal portion of each leaflet.
