The genus is now considered to be grammatically masculine, and adjectival specific epithets therefore end in -us. HABITAT: Bottomland forests, riverbanks, mostly on rich alluvial sediments, or on slopes over mafic or calcareous rocks.
COMMENTS: NY west to ND, south to Panhandle FL and TX. Var. cheathumii Lundell is endemic to TX.
