NCBG DESCRIPTIVES
INTRO:Erect to sprawling native annual with sensitive leaves, frequenting old fields, roadsides, and forest margins. STEMS: branching, slightly reddish, and smooth to minutely furry. LEAVES:alternate, pinnately divided into 6 – 14 pairs of leaflets that react to touch by folding inward; tiny, saucer-shaped gland on each petiole. INFLORESCENCE: consists of small clusters from leaf axils. FLOWERS: 1 in. wide on ½-in. pedicel; 5 bright yellow petals of unequal sizes bear red markings at their bases. FRUITS: flattened, brown seed pods, 1 – 2 in. long. COMMENTS: The very similar Chamaecrista fasciculata var. macropserma has larger seed pods and is found in freshwater tidal marshes.
