NCBG DESCRIPTIVES

INTRO: Erect, bushy, colony-forming perennial of salt and brackish marshes, overwash flats, salt flats and disturbed tidal shores.
STEMS: Stems profusely branched, succulent, usually densely gray-hairy.
LEAVES: Leaves opposite, spoon-shaped to lance-elliptic, to 3 in. long, succulent, occasionally toothed near the base, gray-green, hairy on both surfaces.
INFLORESCENCE:
FLOWERS: Daisy-like composite flowers (heads) held on stalks at ends of branches; heads about 2/3 in. wide, consisting of 12-30 short, yellow ray florets encircling a central disk of tiny, yellow tubular florets interspersed with spiny bracts. A series of small, green bracts surrounds the base of each head.
FRUITS: Fruit a somewhat flattened, triangular seed; many seeds are packed into the brown, spiny, burr-like remains of the flower head.
