NCBG DESCRIPTIVES
INTRO:Erect rhizomatous perennial of open forests, clearing, woodlands and woodland borders. STEMS: Stems simple or branched above, mostly smooth and often with a waxy-white coating. LEAVES: Leaves opposite,petiolate,oval to lance-oval with tapered tip, 2-6 in. long, sharply toothed, often rough-surfaced above, slightly hairy beneath. INFLORESCENCE: FLOWERS:Composite flowers (heads) solitary on long stalks from upper leaf axils; 1 1/2-3 1/2 in. wide; consisting of 8-16 bright yellow linear-oblong ray florets with slightly notched tips encircling a domed center disk of 30 or more darker yellow-orange, 5-lobed, tubular florets. 2 series of oblong-oval bracts surround the cup-shaped base of each head, the outer ones with lightly recurved tips. Plant Sale Text: Smooth oxeye produces many bright yellow daisy-like flowers in late summer and early fall. The genus name Heliopsis is derived from the Greek, meaning “resembling the sun.†This plant is one of our longest-blooming perennials and makes an excellent cut flower. Smooth oxeye flowers best in full sun but will still bloom when planted in open shade. When grown in part shade, this southeastern native perennial is more open and less compact. Smooth Oxeye is a great plant for attracting butterflies and many other pollinators.
